Suman sa Bilao (or Sweet Rice on Winnowing Basket)

We don't make this as often as the more popular 'suman sa dahon ng saging' (sweet rice wrapped in banana leaves) because the winnowing basket is hard to find here in Vancouver, BC. Many customers ask for 'suman sa bilao' just because of the winnowing basket. Just like suman wrapped in banana leaves, you would spread sweet rice evenly on a bilao lined with banana leaves and then add caramelized brown sugar.

Meal Ideas for your Thanksgiving Spread

The main entree is of course the turkey. Can't do without a bird on the table on thanksgiving. If you don't have the time to prep for this, there is an alternative at the end of this. Halved-potatoes in skin, stuffed with mashed potatoes and bacon. Pansit noodles with shrimps. Baby carrots, asparagus, and brussel sprouts. For dessert, sweet buko pie. I mentioned in the beginning that you can substitute an over-roasted turkey with roast beef for your centre-piece and it will be just as good. This slab of meat will take only 1 hour to cook and for accessories, we include chopped carrots and baby potatoes.

Handmade Empanadas from Niagara Falls

My in-law's favorite is making these delicious homemade empanadas filled with minced beef, chopped carrots, potatoes, and some raisins. It's a labor of love and even though it takes many hours to make, you can tell each empanada is infused with his passion.
